How often should I have my eyes examined?

Dr. Donald's Answer: For most adults, I recommend a comprehensive eye exam every 1-2 years. However, this can vary based on age, risk factors, and existing conditions. Children should have their first eye exam at 6 months, again at age 3, and before starting school. After age 40, annual exams become more important to monitor for age-related changes. If you have diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or other risk factors, more frequent exams may be necessary. Regular exams are crucial not just for vision correction, but for detecting serious conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and even systemic health issues like diabetes and hypertension.
